Four mistakes to avoid when getting divorced

If you are considering divorce, it is important to know what you are getting into just as much as what you are getting out of. Indeed, you want to get out of a troubled relationship, but it is also critical that you minimize the mistakes that can lead to a long, tumultuous divorce and a difficult after-divorce experience.

With that, we offer this post with the following tips.

Mistake #1 – Avoiding mediation – No matter how angry you are at your soon to be ex, mediation should be a part of your divorce strategy. The process is cheaper and quicker and it could ultimately save you a great deal of heartache.

Mistake #2 – Bad mouthing the other parent – In the same vein, your anger should not lead you to bad mouth the other parent in front of the kids. After all, this may cause some significant emotional issues for the kids, because to them, the other parent is very special.

Mistake #3 – Taking legal advice from anyone – When people know you are getting divorced, it is not uncommon for you to get quite a bit of unsolicited advice. No matter what people say you are entitled to, it is no substitute for professional advice from an experienced family law attorney.

Mistake #4 – Refusing to co-parent – Just because your romantic relationship is over, it does not mean that your parenting relationship has ended. You are still a parent in the eyes of your kids, so it is important to be open to co-parenting, regardless of your differences.

The preceding is not legal advice.

If you have additional questions about potential mistakes to avoid during divorce, an experienced family law attorney can advise you.
