2015 could see more disabled workers in the workplace

In 2015, the U.S. economy is expected to grow steadily, and the first quarter of the year appears to be following that prediction. Even though it is early, there is reason for optimism as people who had struggled for years to get back into the workforce appear to be poised for a positive year.

That optimism is spreading towards the disabled in the workforce. According to a recent disabilityscoop.com report, the number of disabled workers entering the workforce is increasing. The U.S. Department of Labor reported that the economy produced 252,000 new jobs for the month of December, which brought down the unemployment rate to 5.6 percent nationally. Indeed, seasonal jobs accounted for a part of this growth, but the number of jobs added was beyond expectations.

Unfortunately, there was no such decrease in the unemployment rate for disabled workers. Unlike the jobless rate for able-bodied workers,  the unemployment rate for disabled individuals increased from 10.8 percent in November, to 11.2 percent last month. However, this type of increase should not be seen as a bad omen for the disabled. After all, more disabled people are looking for work. It appears that more employers are willing to take chances on people who will work hard, give it their all and don’t let their limitations define them.

2015 may also be a boon for those who depend on Social Security disability benefits as their primary source of income. Essentially, disabled workers who receive these benefits may work a certain amount of time while still receiving benefits. If you have questions, an experienced attorney can help.
